The Republic of Croatia is a middle-sized European country. Croatia is a land of open frontiers and a part of the European political and cultural history.



Croatia extends from the farthest eastern edges of the Alps in the north-west to the Pannonian lawlands and the banks of the Danube in the east. he central region is coverd by the Dinara mountain range ( the highest peak is 1,831 m above the sea level ), and its southern part reaches the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

SURFACE: The mainland covers 56,542 sq. km, and the surface of the territorial sea is 31,067 sq. km. with 4,400,000 inhabitants.

CAPITAL: The capital city of Croatia is Zagreb ( 770,000 inhibitants ) the economic, traffic, cultural and academic centre of the country.

COASTLINE: Croatia coastline stretchs 5,835 km, and contains 1,185 islands, cliffs and reefs. The largest islands are Krk and Cres.

CLIMATE: There are two climate zones; the temperate continental climate, locally also the mountainous climate, prevails in the inland, whereas the pleasant Mediterranean climate prevails along the Adriatic coast, with many sunny days, dry and hot summers, mild and moist winters. The average temperature in the inland: January 1 to 3C, August 22 to 26C, the average temperature at the seaside: January 5 to 10C, August 26 to 30C. The sea temperature amounts to 12C in winter, and 25C in summer.
